The Department of Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology (SSPC) at the University of Liverpool invites applications for a fully funded Graduate Teaching Fellowship (GTF), beginning in October 2025. This fellowship offers the opportunity to pursue a full-time PhD while gaining hands-on teaching experience in undergraduate courses, particularly criminology and criminal justice.
Founded in 1905, the department has a long-standing reputation for critical and engaged research. The successful candidate will join a vibrant and supportive community of postgraduate researchers working at the cutting edge of social inquiry.
What the Fellowship Offers
- Full coverage of UK tuition fees (currently £5,006 per year)
- Annual maintenance stipend at UKRI level (£20,780 for 2025–26)
- Experience in teaching and assessment across core undergraduate modules
- Access to in-house training and mentoring opportunities
The fellowship supports three years of full-time PhD study, with the possibility of a fourth, unfunded year for writing up.
Who Should Apply
We welcome applications from candidates who:
- Hold a strong undergraduate degree in Sociology, Criminology, or a related discipline
- Have completed or are nearing completion of a relevant Master’s degree
- Are committed to both academic research and undergraduate teaching
- Have a research proposal that aligns with the department’s expertise and research clusters
- Are prepared to contribute to teaching in criminology or related subject areas
Previous teaching experience is not required.
International applicants are welcome to apply, though they must meet UK visa requirements. Please note that the funding covers UK tuition fees only; international students may be required to cover any fee difference.
